Running

Running and I have a bit of history, in high school I ran track for 3 years and cross country for 2 years. During my time competing I participated in long distance track events including the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m. For cross country I ran the typical 5k, and occasionaly a 2 mile relay. Despite being somewhat of a decent runner, I had no passion for it; I actually dreaded practices and meets. After graduating I didn't run for almost a year and never thought it would become a hobby I picked up again. At the start of this year I decided I wanted to try to get back into running to stay in shape and healty. Shortly after I signed up to run a half marathon in December of this year.

When it comes to finding a good trail or route to run, I'm always on the search. Here in San Marcos my go to spot is Five Mile Dam Park. It's a concrete one mile loop great for solo runnning or shorter distances. For long runs, usually ten or more miles, I take a trip down to San Antonio and run a trail at either Phill Hardberger or McAllister Park. As we approach the fall and tempatures begin to decrease I plan to start doing longer runs in the city of San Marcos. Although I haven't found a good trail, maybe road or city routes will become part of my routine.

Over the past few years I've been running I discovered what techniques and equipment works best for me. Running in the evening about an hour before the sun sets or early moring as it's rising are the best times to avoid heat exhaustion. Also not taking too long of breaks inbetween activities, consistency is key to maintaining your progress. Typically, I try my best to fit about three to four a week around my academic schedule. Equipment is another important factor. Comfortable supportive running shoes are a necessity along with exercise attire. Especially in Texas heat, being prepared and having the essentials are vital to having a good run!
